We are at a moment when regulations in the guise of food safety are preventing small-scale farmers from selling directly to the public. Family fishermen are quickly being pushed off their boats to make way for fishing rights to be traded on the stock market. At the same time, the local food movement is growing at a fantastic speed. We are at a critical crossroads.

Food Voices
brings the voices of farmers and fisherfolk to the forefront of the food policy debate. It offers a platform for those in the fields and on the boats to convey their struggles and triumphs. Dairy farmers of Wisconsin, salmon trollers of Alaska, clam collectors of Ecuador, urban farmers of New York, and fishermen of Haiti share their efforts to protect and enhance their livelihoods.


Food Voices recognizes the five following ingredients are essential to fully realize food sovereignty:

  • Local Governance Structures
  • Access to Resources and Territories
  • Environmental Stewardship
